Dollar Stronger Against Euro, Pound

Dollar started to trade higher today against euro after the productivity report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics came out, as it was trading against pound sterling earlier in the morning after some bearish data on United Kingdom PMI and housing were released.

Nonfarm productivity (revised value)
in third quarter of 2007 increased unexpectedly well - by 6.3%. Previous value was 4.9% and the analysts' expectations averaged at 5.8% growth. This indicator without any doubts will continue to strengthen dollar until the end of the week.

Factory orders in October also showed a growth that almost no one could see happening - 0.5%, while analysts' consensus was at 0% stagnation.

Bad news came with non-manufacturing ISM report which showed today that November Business activity index in services sector declined to 54.1% from 55.8% in October, which worse drop than it was expected - 55.0%.

Crude oil inventories again were in the red zone, but today with a very high negative value - 8 million barrels drop compared to previous week report. Combined with today's OPEC decision not to increase oil output, this news may hit dollar as the oil prices will surge to the new maximums.

Pessimistic Indicators from U.S.

U.S. dollar looks unsure whether to fall or to rise on the Forex market after some important macroeconomic indicators were released today. One of the most important data came out from the University of Michigan and Reuters - Michigan Sentiments Index, which represents consumer confidence. Consumer confidence is important, because it will determine future consumer spendings that in their turn fuel the U.S. economy growth.

Michigan Sentiments Index
in November was 76.1; it fell by 4.8 points compared to its October value of 80.9. But according to over-pessimistic expectations (that were at 75.0), Michigan index did quite well this month. Of course, objectively it didn't.

Initial jobless claims for the previous week were released today by the U.S. Department of Labor. They fell right into the market forecast value of 330k, lower than last week's 341k (revised from 339k).

Leading market indicators are considered to be weak in their influence on markets behavior, but nevertheless their value for the October reflects current U.S. economical situation - decrease by 0.5%, below 0.3% expected drop and, of course, worse than 0.3% growth in September.

And with the U.S. commercial crude oil inventories another falling week, oil can be expected to see new record highs in the next days. Crude oil inventories decreased by 1.1 million barrels last week, following the 2.8 growth on previous week. High oil prices may hit dollar on Forex, pushing to the new bottoms.

Mixed Housing Data and FOMC Minutes

EUR/USD is hitting its all-time record high level beyond 1.4800 after the pessimistic analysts' forecasts on housing data appeared to be almost completely true today. Housing Starts for the October grew to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.229 million, compared to 1.193 million in September and 1.175 million expected for this month. Meanwhile Building Permits dropped significantly - October seasonally adjusted annual rate appeared 1.178 million, compared to 1.261 million in September and 1.200 million expected by the market for this month. Significant dropdown in new building permits will eventually lower the housing starts numbers in future, thus the all-negative market reaction to this housing report.

Federal Open Market Committee released the minutes for their October 30/31 meeting today. As it was generally expected by the traders, the concerns of FOMC are slowly but surely moving from inflation to a possible economical slowdown on the background of the housing crisis, the subprime lending crisis and unemployment destabilization in U.S. These were also the first minutes to include Federal Reserve Governors and Reserve Bank Presidents projections of the future economy development. Actually, those projections don't look very informative to me (with a high possible forecast error and all the numbers to close to the current), but it is a good sign that FOMC will share its views regularly and formally, without traders having to guess "what did they mean by that node"-style. Here is the introduction of the projections from the minutes:
The Committee then resumed its discussion of an enhanced role for the economic projections that are made periodically by the members of the Board of Governors and the Reserve Bank presidents. At this meeting, participants reached a consensus on increasing the frequency and expanding the content of the projections that in the past have been released to the public in summary form twice a year. They agreed to publish with the minutes a summary of participants’ economic projections made for this meeting and to release a press statement describing the plan for the future. The release of more frequent forecasts covering longer time spans and accompanied by explanations of those forecasts was seen as providing the public with more context for understanding the Committee’s monetary policy decisions.
I hope that FOMC will continue to improve its information sharing services and these projections will start to offer a more clear picture of the market to the traders soon.

CPI at 0.3%, Jobless Claims at 330k, Oil Inventories Grow

The release of the not so good news from the U.S. economy caused a wave of bullish dollar speculation on Forex with the increased risk aversion sentiments among traders. Going back from stocks to bonds wasn't prevented even by the fear of another possible cut rate before the year's end. EUR/USD fell from almost 1.4700 to the powerful psychological support level of 1.4600.

Bureau of Labor Statistics
published its consumer inflation data - CPI increased only by 0.2% in October, whereas 0.3% growth was mostly anticipated. U.S. Department of Labor gave its numbers for the previous week's initial jobless claims - 339,000 - 14,000 higher than expected.

Crude oil inventories report finally gave a positive sentiment for the dollar bullish traders - there was a 2.8 million barrels growth last week. A good sign after some major decreases, which spiked oil prices to $100/barrel and depreciated dollar against other currencies.

Unexpectedly, Philadelphia Fed General Business Conditions Index increased significantly in November compared to October - constituting 8.2 against 6.8 in October with even more pessimistic forecasts for November.

Low Producer Prices Inflation Helps Dollar

After Bureau of Labor Statistics reported its statistical data for October Producer Price Index (which indirectly affects Consumer Price Index with a time lag) today, U.S. dollar began reclaiming some of its strength against major currencies. Most notably - against Euro which grew significantly against all majors today. After PPI report dollar went back from past 1.4700 levels to 1.4670 levels. PPI increased by 0.1% - lower than pessimistic forecast value of 0.3%, that was after September 1.1% growth. Core PPI didn't change at all.

October Retail Sales came out at the expected level of growth, increasing by 0.2%, while September numbers were revised from 0.6% to 0.7% increase. The same situation was observed with September Business Inventories report - growth by 0.4% and previous month number revised from 0.1% to 0.3% increase.

Good PPI increases the chances for interest rates cut by Fed. But today Richard Fisher (Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas President) spoke about the Fed's vision of U.S. economy growth as strong and inflation risks as a more important factor. Perhaps, lower producer prices inflation caused more demand for U.S. dollar basing on its increased buying ability.

New Signs of Recession for U.S. Economy

The closer it is to the October 31st when the FOMC's meeting on interest rates policy will be held the stronger the dollar bears feel themselves on the Forex market. With almost each day bringing new reasons for the Fed to decrease interest rate again this time the decision became clear now.

Initial jobless claims for the last week decreased compared to the previous week report, but still came out worse than expected - 331k compared to 339k previous week and 320k expected.

Durable goods orders by the manufacturers, according to U.S. Census Bureau, in September decreased by $3.8 billion or 1.7%, while previous value was revised from 4.9% (also decrease) to 5.3%. Now, considering that the markets were expecting increase by 1.5%, it is possible to say that manufacturing sector is suffering or at least is going to suffer something close to a crisis.

September new home sales increased a little from August number - 770k against 735k (but August value was revised from 795k) and they were still lower than expectations. But real estate sector is already known to be in downfall. So, at least for me nothing surprising here.

Oil And Home Sales Fall Again

This day was very volatile on Forex EUR/USD pair, but it was without a distinct leader among those two. With dollar falling and rising during the day it ended almost at the same point it started. But trend for the rest of the week could have been probably founded today by two important fundamental reports on U.S. economics.

First, the crude oil inventories for the last week fell by whopping 5.29 million barrels. Department of Energy even changed the phrase in its report from "well above the upper end of the average range for this time of year" to "near the upper end of the average range". With low oil inventories, the price for this vital commodity can continue its fast growth seen during the last days. And expensive oil will almost certainly mean cheap dollar.

Second, existing home sales for September showed decreased by almost 0.46 millions to 5.04M (total annual rate). That is more than 19% lower than the September 2006 figure and also significantly lower than National Association of Realtors expected for this September. Weak real estate reports adds another reason for FOMC to lower interest rates next meeting (31st of October). And that can't be good for dollar too.

EUR/USD Fluctuations Continue

EUR/USD retraced back to 1.4200 level today after some very disappointing housing data came out in U.S. Overall situation continues to remain uncertain with the EUR/USD ranging between 1.4050 and 1.4250. It now formed a clear plateau pattern on the daily chart marking some major break in the Euro vs. Dollar struggle.

Housing report for September showed a further downfall in this economics sector with the decrease in both housing starts and building permits numbers exceeding pessimistic market forecasts. There were 1,191k housing starts (against 1,285k expected) and 1,226k new building permits (against 1,300k expected) this September.

Contrary to real estate sector bad news September CPI report showed a better than expected value - 0.3% against 0.2% expected, and that's from the -0.1% in August.

Crude oil inventories report for the October 8-12 week showed a major increase in commercial oil inventories - 1.8 million barrels, which can easily compensate for the previous decrease by 1.67 million barrels.

Dollar Regains Positions After Mixed News

After yesterday's EUR/USD high peaks dollar is showing a good trend today moving the EUR/USD pair back to below 1.4200 levels hitting bottom 1.4150 mark. That of course can be considered as an ongoing correction for the previous weeks growth of Euro, especially considering that there were too few good news for the U.S. economy on which the dollar growth could have been based.

Monthly retails sales report for the September was among good news - 0.6% growth (0.2% was the expected value).

Producer Price Index came out good to with 1.1% growth against 0.5% expected by analysts. But the core component of PPI was very low - just 0.1% (0.2% expected). So, the big growth of PPI can be accounted on the recent oil price rally.

Among bad news, the business inventories in August added only 0.1%, which significantly below the already pessimistic forecast of 0.3% growth.

Continuing its stagnation and some recent decrease Michigan Sentiment index (preliminary!) showed a decrease from 83.4 to 82.0 points, thus not meeting the optimistic expectations (84.0).

Dollar Loses On Good U.S. Trade Balance

A significantly improved trade balance of the United States was reported today with the value of -$57.6B ($1.6B improvement from previous month). While narrowing trade balance deficit is a good news for the whole U.S. economy a reaction on this news wasn't very good on the currency market. Dollar stopped its strengthening and gave up almost 100 points against Euro currency hitting 1.4240 daily maximum on EUR/USD.

Some other good news came from employment sector of the economy, showing that only 308k jobless claims were issued last week, which is slightly better than 320k of the previous report.

On the bad side U.S. oil inventories had a rather sharp fall last week - 1.7M barrels, which is especially worrying just before the heating season. But the whole inventories volume is above average level, so it might be not so bad after all.

Employment Situation in U.S. Improving

Dollar continues its volatile market dance with Euro currency undecided whether to go south back to 1.4000 or break through to 1.4500. Recent bad fundamental news made positive effect on dollar, most probably because of financial institutions cashing out of stock markets. But today this "bad news - strong dollar" trend was broken.

September nonfarm payrolls came out at 110k - even better than already optimistic expectations of analysts (100k). More than that, extremely bad August result (-4k) was revised towards a much better one (89k), showing that U.S. employment market is still strong and is not dramatically affected by subprime lending crisis.

Among other employment market indicators today came out: unemployment rate - 4.7%, average hourly earnings - 0.4% increase, average workweek - 33.8%.

EUR/USD - 1.4500 by the End of This Year?

With the Fed's rather predictable decision on interest rates cut by 0.50% September 18 (last Wednesday) dollar was doomed to cross the 1.4000 level (on EUR/USD). Its fall continued through all days left after the Fed's statement release. Hitting historically high levels with the maximum at 1.4120, USD ended last week above 1.4000, thus opening further opportunities for the EUR/USD to go to the new maximums.

This week can show (or maybe even it should show) some correction - fall back to 1.3900-1.4000 level is possible, but it is very unlikely that EUR/USD will close below 1.4000.

The main question is if the EUR/USD has enough vigor to rally to 1.4500? Or does its potential end in the low 1.4000-1.4100 levels? If we look at USD interest rates - they are still quite high. 4.75% provide a lot of place for the Fed to cut them in order save the stock and real estate market bubbles. On the other hands with the explosive end of all carry trade and consequential inevitable U.S. real estate sector collapse, Fed can decide to stay away from interest rates and with the fall of stock market USD will rise. But it is very unbelievable scenario for it to happen before the end of 2007. So, the best choice for now is to look at Fed and stay bullish on EUR/USD as long as Fed keeps on saving the financial markets, not the dollar.

Dollar Strengthens on Average Economic Data

EUR/USD is closing below 1.3900 level after a major rally earlier this week. The main driver for the growth were the market expectations for the FOMC to lower the interest rates by at least 0.25% next week, while last two days' correction can be a reflections of some less confident traders, that are sure that if FOMC won't lower rates or will stay with 0.25% decrease for a longer period, then markets will have to play back current growth. Lack of surprise data helped the second type of traders today.

U.S. export (excluding agricultural) and import (excluding oil) prices changed by 0.1% and -0.1% respectively in August, while July brought -0.2% and 0.1% respectively.

Retail sales were up by 0.3% in August, which is lower than both July growth by 0.5% and the same expected value for August.

Industrial capacity utilization in August remained at the 82.2% level as it has been in July, while the market was expecting decline by 0.2%.

Manufacturers' and trade business inventories rose by 0.5% in July compared to 0.4% growth in June. This is a slightly more optimistic number than 0.3% growth expected by the market.

Nonfarm Payrolls Drop In August

EUR/USD spiked high almost reaching 1.3800 level as the U.S. nonfarm payrolls for the August decreased by 4,000. Nonfarm payrolls is one of the most important measures for the employment market of the United States, which in its turn serves as the indicator of the economy health. A fall by 4k is the lowest monthly value since 2003. This is certainly a bad sign for the overall U.S. economy, which will be (and already was) treated by the financial markets not in the favor of U.S. stocks or USD. Other macroeconomical data became available today too.

Average hourly earning in August grew at the same rate as in July - by 0.3%. Overall unemployment rate remained at 4.6%. All data came out without surprise - at the expected levels.

Business wholesale inventories in July increased by 0.2%, while in June they grew by 0.5% and analysts expected the same growth in July.

Better Than Average Data From U.S. Pushes EUR/USD Above 1.3700

This is a bit confusing situation for the financial markets, since the good economical data from United States should empower USD causing EUR/USD to fall, but today good data on labor productivity and ISM services index caused EUR/USD to soar. This can be explained by the increased optimism in the U.S. economy which causes more big traders to continue carry trading, during which USD is in a downtrend.

U.S. crude oil inventories
in the past week fell (again) by 3.9 billion barrels, but still remain at a high level for the current seasonal average. One of the possible reasons for this decrease can lie in a hurricane season (which is quite weak in this year so far).

Initial jobless claims in the past week dropped to 318,000 compared to 337,000 previous week, which while still a high number is better than 330,000 expected by the market. But the more important employment data - nonfarm payrolls for August, will come out tomorrow.

ISM services index (business activity) in August came out at 55.8 level - the same as the month before. This is a good level for this index, especially when analysts predicted its fall to 54.5.

Nonfarm productivity in second quarter of 2007 (revised value) increased by 2.6%. This growth exceeded both the market expectations (2.4%) and the Q1 value (1.8%). High productivity in the nonfarm area is a good sign for the U.S. economy, which by the end of 2007 can show a very strong growth.

Euro Recovers Against USD After ISM PMI and Construction Spending

EUR/USD regained part of its losses, received earlier this day and yesterday, after some important but not encouraging data from United States. EUR/USD is still in the flat zone (speaking in long terms), but some strong intraday volatility hints for possible breakout with the direction still unknown.

PMI index by Institute for Supply Management (ISM) was reported today and came out by 0.1 point lower than expected decrease from 53.8 to 53.0 - at 52.9 level. This can hint for a probably weak position of the U.S. manufacturing sector, which will show itself in the later months.

Construction spending in July fell by 0.4% compared to the June amounts. It was much worse than the expected 0.1% fall. So the crisis in the real estate sector continues in time and strengthens in powers without any signs of recovering with all those money interventions by Fed.

Some Good Fundamentals from U.S.

Following the day of not so good (rather bad) economical news from U.S. yesterday, markets were surprised by some very optimistic indicators presented today. A reaction on both stocks and Forex markets was supportive with the stocks bulls, EUR and GBP to gain and the bears with JPY and USD to lose somewhat.
Personal income and spendings number for July came out at 0.5% and o.4% growth that is higher than 0.3% expected (for both). While the core PCE inflation came a little worse than expected - 0.1% against 0.2%.
Chicago PMI - the major manufacturing sentiment index came out 53.8 level increasing from 53.4 and above the expected 53.0.
July factory orders were the main surprise - 3.7% from the 1.0% previous month and 3.0% from the expected number for July.
Michigan sentiment index reached 83.4 number - which is higher than both previous and expected numbers and is a historically high value for this index.
Overall, almost every indicator came out surprisingly high and probably gave some fuel for the future Fed's interest rates decision.

U.S. Economy Slowing

U.S. macroeconomical data releases get a little less overoptimistic while the subprime lending crisis takes its toll and the carry trade is uncertain. This is the second week after a major carry trade crisis when the major indicators of carry trade, like GBP/JPY and EUR/JPY, are trading flat without any signs of the future for this type of financial trading. But worser U.S. economical indicators hint for some major change in the global financial kitchen.
Global domestic product for the second quarter of the 2007 showed a big increase compared to first quarter (which has been a big disappointment) but still 0.1% lower of 4.1% expected.
Initial jobless claims for the previous week came out to be 334,000. Not only it is 14k higher than experts have been expecting, but it is also a record high number since the April of this year. This may lead to the lower August non-farm payrolls report and higher unemployment rate for that month.

Carry Trade Ruined by Stocks Market Chaos

EUR/USD reached its two month minimum and almost broker out of its long-term bullish trend today. World stocks markets continue to fall with the main reason lying in panic caused by the crisis in subprime lending U.S. sector. Cashing out of stocks papers causes also carry trade retreating with a huge buying back of JPY and USD (in a lesser dimension) for other currencies - thus the rally of JPY and USD. Even bad economical news from U.S. don't stop from buying it for Euro.
Weekly employment data showed a little increase of the initial jobless claims - 322k from 316k previous week, while analysts expected a small decrease.
Housing data continue to come out worse and worse - housing starts came out to be 1381,000, while building permits - at 1373k, which is approximately 25k lesser than the market was expecting.

Dollars Benefits from Excessive Euro Liquidity

EUR/USD hit its new significant bottom near 1.3455 level after dollar continued to grow on the high Euro liquidity level and good economical releases from U.S. Next technical support for EUR/USD lies near 1.3330 mark, so it is reasonable to expect some more USD rallying by the end of this week or next week.
Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, released by Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed 0.1% growth in July (as expected) compared to 0.2% growth in June.
Industrial Production report didn't make any surprises too and came out with a 0.3% growth in July (in June it grew by 0.5%).
Net Foreign Purchases in July fell by $5.2B compared with June number and came out at $120.9B level, which is still historically high.
